I'm Back!

Hi all. I took a few weeks off from posting, hope you don't mind too much. Funnily enough, my absence roughly coincided with my acquisition of an Xbox360 and the game "Left 4 Dead" (if anyone wants to add me feel free, my gamertag is Henry 5th).

This poster and other authorised merchandise available from the Valve store.

Here's yet another variation on the Experimental Jetset template.

Molotov cocktails - on the house!

I haven't just got the one game of course. No, when I get sick of shooting zombies on L4D I can relax and shoot some zombies on Resident Evil 5 (which finally gives me the excuse to post this awesome Resident Evil 5 t-shirt, originally given away with the game purchase at Comic-Con).

Do want. Buy it here.

SITE NEWS: I recently got another small commission payout for sales derived from the affiliate links included in some posts, so I'll be running another competition soon and giving away two $25 Threadless Gift Certificates. This competition will not be promoted on other sites or social media like the last one, it's just a thank you to the loyal Thunderfrogs subscribers.

Three Wolf Moon Book Deal?

And now I bring you more from the story that just won't go away. Do you remember the big hoopla that came with the Three Wolf Moon t-shirt being sold at Amazon? It's something that Thunderfrogs has written about before and added to when Threadless came out with their own version. Now there is a new "chapter" to the story.

According to LA Weekly, the company behind the Three Wolf Moon t-shirt, The Mountain, is creating a book aptly titled "Sheep in Wolves Clothing". The shirt is still being aggressively sold at Amazon and is currently ranked number 10 in apparel on their bestseller list. This isn't the first time that an internet meme has gone from computer to print, but it is the first one to my knowledge based solely on a t-shirt.

The funny/obvious part of this whole story is the fact that the customer reviews on Amazon is what has driven the sales and not the t-shirt itself. Are those same user-submitted reviews enough to push the sales of the book? We'll have to wait and see if the book possesses the same magical powers as the original tee.

This post was guest written by Blake from You Design It who wants to help you design t-shirts.

Designer: James Lillis

Here's a post I wrote back in February, that I never got around to publishing:

Australian designer James Lillis was nice enough to get in touch with me, after I featured his "I Ate Mushrooms In New York" t-shirt in my Top 10 Mario T-Shirts post. After checking out his portfolio at Red Bubble, I thought I'd share some of my favourites with you.

James' most famous design is a pop-culture mashup of two icons of the current political and entertainment fields. His "Audacity of Joke" t-shirt takes Shepard Fairey's controversial Hope poster, and substitutes the (then) U.S. Presidential candidate Barack Obama with Heath Ledger's Joker. A deceptively simple parody that subverts the zeitgeist of 2008, and questions the blind faith that swept America's first black president into power.

Despite saying "JOKE" in large capital letters, James' design has been taken rather seriously by some - with some critics reacting strongly against it.

The subversive element runs strongly through James' work, like the Red Bull and Hello Kitty treatments, but where he really comes into his own is in the film and video game references. Star Wars and space invader tees are nothing new, but the Lillis treatment gives them cultural relevance.

My favourite of all James' work is another iconoclastic piece - Che's Lovin' It®. Juxtaposing the Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara with fast-food mascot Ronald McDonald, it takes a broad swipe at corporate America, cynical marketing techniques, and selling out.

Che Guevara's image has already been used and abused by two generations of bedroom activists, t-shirt designers, and advertising executives, though it's hard to think of any worse indignity for Che than being the face of the corporate fast-food chain that's had such a big hand in destroying so much of the rainforest in his beloved South America.

Check out my interview with James here.
